Former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed has rejoined Bangladesh’s coaching setup as the spin bowling consultant for the upcoming two-Test series against South Africa. Mushtaq, who has a wealth of experience, also worked with the team during the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the tour of Pakistan. However, due to other commitments, he couldn’t participate in the India tour but expressed his interest in rejoining the Bangladesh team once those obligations were fulfilled.
Mushtaq was seen actively engaged during the net session at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday (October 19). He spent significant time guiding the cricketers and had long discussions with the newly appointed head coach, Phil Simmons, who took over from Chandika Hathurusingha.
A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official stated, “He [Mushtaq] is here for this [South Africa] series. Whenever he is available this year and has no prior commitments, he will work series by series with us. Right now, he is here; we’ll see what happens in the next series.” Another BCB official revealed that they are exploring the possibility of offering Mushtaq a long-term contract at the end of the year, provided both parties agree.
Whether Mushtaq will be available for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan and the tour of the West Indies remains to be seen. His long-term association with Bangladesh cricket is contingent upon his availability and interest in continuing the role with the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
